Welcome to Kindergarten.  It will be an exciting year filled with many wonderful learning experiences.  I have been teaching for
Prince William County Public Schools since 1993 and am certified to teach regular education K-3, specific learning disabilities, and psychology.  My educational background includes a master's degree in counseling from the College of William and Mary and a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in special education from James Madison University.  I completed additional coursework at George Mason University to obtain my teaching certification.   I am dedicated to ensuring your kindergarten student has a positive educational experience and loves school! Please contact me should you ever have any questions or concerns about our classroom.  I appreciate your support and input.

Mrs. Rosa Febus is our classroom Instructional Assistant.  We both provide small group instruction to students and work together to create a happy and engaging classroom environment.  Mrs. Febus is fluent in Spanish and can assist with communication as needed.

VISION: We will be the best kindergarten students we can be!
MISSION:  We will be the best kindergarten students by working together, solving problems, and trying our best.

Announcements

Kindergarten Celebration

Dear Families,
The 2019-20 school year is coming to an end and our kindergarten students will be promoted to first grade.  We would like to announce that on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 from 2:30-4:30 pm, we will be having a "Kindergarten Drive-thru Celebration".  During this time, kindergarten families may drive through Minnieville Elementary's bus loop and Minnieville staff will be outside to return student belongings and hand out a special celebration treat to our kindergarten students.  At this time, you may also return any school items such as library and classroom books.  We will practice social distancing during this event and ask that families stay in cars and we will pass items through the windows.  Please help us by holding or putting a sign with your student's name and teacher on the window so we can easily locate and hand you student belongings.  We hope that everyone will be able to drive through and celebrate with us!

Choice Boards

We have entered the next phase of Prince William County's online learning program, which means that families have been provided with learning resources, ungraded review activities, and optional learning activities to improve grades. Beginning Monday, April 20, 2020, a Choice Board of learning activities will be posted on ClassDojo, as well as the class webpage. To access choice boards on this webpage, please use the Files and Documents tab on the left side of page and open the Choice Boards by Week folder. The choice board includes suggested activities that are optional, ungraded, andreview of previously taught material and skills. Students may complete activities from either column: Activity Choice 1, Activity Choice 2, OR a mix of both columns. Our goal is to not overwhelm families at this time. Please do what you are able and as your schedule allows.Thank you for all that you are doing to help your child continue learning.

Teacher Office Hours

Beginning the week of April 20, 2020, Minnieville Elementary kindergarten teachers will have office hours every Wednesday from 11 am-1 pm per guidance from Prince William County Public Schools.  During office hours, parents will be able to contact teachers to ask questions or obtain assistance with academic support.  Teachers will be available via Class Dojo and email and will be able to provide you with a prompt response.  As we have done throughout the 2019-20 school year, we will always try our best to respond to your concerns.  Thank you for your continued support.

Optional Assignments to Improve Grades
We hope your Spring Break was restful and are looking forward to sharing the next steps in learning for our kindergarten students. Prince William County Public Schools has extended the third grading period to April 24, 2020. Students had completed a minimum of 7 graded assignments as of March 13, 2020. Students have the option to complete and submit review assignments to improve grades. Please have students complete assignments independently so we are able to provide feedback for growth. You can take a picture of student work and send it to the teacher via a Class Dojo message or email by Tuesday, April 21, 2020. Below are some optional activities that can be submitted.

Reading/Writing:
1. Write the lowercase and uppercase letters of the alphabet with proper letter formation.
2. Draw a picture and write 1-3 complete sentences about the picture using capitalization, punctuation, and spacing between words.
Math:
1. Write numbers from 0-20 with proper formation.
2. Create and solve an addition or subtraction problem with numbers to 5 by using objects and drawing the solution. For example, "I have 3 toy cars and 2 toy trucks. How many toys do I have in all?" The student will use objects at home to create the story problem and draw a picture of what they did and write a number sentence (such as 3 and 2 is 5).
Science/Social Studies:
1. Draw and label a realistic picture of spring that includes people, plants, and animals.
2. Draw and label a picture of yourself appropriately dressed for spring weather.
